~DIY: Denim Overall Dress (Long post)~

Oh, hello there!~
This DIY has seriously been on my mind since, maybe, middle school or so! I could never find the perfect pair of overalls that I thought fit me nicely. But today I will have my overalls! YESSS! Even though it was a bit of a long and annoying process! Hahaha~

So denim and overalls are really in style right now, I was surprised when I went shopping and saw so many of them! Although I wasn't surprised to find that they didn't look good on me T__T lol. Oh well~

Both images from Tumblr

You know what? This tutorial is good for any kind of overall dress you'd like too! Not just denim! I see  lots of pinafores and dungarees in my future <3__<3

Supplies:
Denim fabric: I recommend using a lightweight denim (you'll see why at the end of this tutorial) as it will be easier to handle and will have a nicer finish!
Scissors: I have separate ones that I use only for fabric~
Pencil for tracing onto your fabric
Pins- lots and LOTS of pins, seriously it will make your life a heckuva lot easier!
Sewing machine: You could try to do this whole project freehand but personally I only freehanded the smaller parts like the straps because free handing the whole things would take even longer!
Needle and thread in complementing/matching/contrasting colors to your fabric, whatever ya like!
Ruler & measuring tape
Patience<-- Lot's of this

Total time for this project: About half a day with breaks and snacks and in between blogging hahaha~ If you powered through the whole project I bet it would only take a few hours for an experienced sewer though!

Difficulty: Intermediate- I'd say you should know some things about seam allowance and a bit of maths for measurements. But other than that you just need to know how to pin, hem, and sew a straight stitch basically! ALSO: it's always good to know all the settings on your sewing machine :3

First off: Take some measurements!
Grab your sewing tape and measure your waist area where you want your skirt to be. Some might want their skirt to be up higher like a high waisted overall dress, some lower like a drop waist skirt overall dress! Here's where I measured mine:

I did mine in centimeters because I find it's just easier to use haha. So my waist ended up being about 100 cm (give or take a few centimeters). Take that number and divide it by 2*3.1415=6.28. Mine was 100/6.28=15.9 and I rounded it up to 16. So 16 cm is the radius of the inside of my circle skirt! Get it? If not click here for a perfect tutorial by the lovely

Ok so you have this first measurement for the inside of the skirt part of the dress. Now you need to figure out how long you want your skirt to be. If you have a skirt with a length you like measure that skirt and then make an outer circle in that length!

Now take your fabric and fold it up into a nice even square. My fabric was about 1.5 yards by 1.5 yards and I folded it (wrong side out) four times into a smaller square. Just to clarify, you take the one giant square, fold it in half so you have a long rectangle, then fold in half again so you have a square which is about 1/4 the size of your original square! BAM!

My square after being folded with wrong sides (insides) out. See bottom left corner? That's the closed side!

On the closed corner of this square is where you'll draw your inner circle. Then once you have that one drawn take the length you wanted your skirt to be and measure from your inner circle to the outside and draw another circle! Don't forget to add a few centimeters of seam allowance!

Make sure all your layers of fabric are lined up before you cut! And remember measure twice cut once :3

Aaand now you have a large fabric donut! Yayyy! I recommend trying it on now to see if you got the waist measurements right~ If it's too small thats better than if its too big because then you can refold it and cut away. A too long skirt is also better than one that's too short because longer ones can be fixed. Don't forget though, you will be hemming the bottom so leave a little extra length to fold it over at least twice and still get the right length!

What I did next was I pinned the bottom for hemming, set it aside to sew later, and then started on the top part of the overall dress! Some people just like a square-ish look but I wanted mine to look a little less boxy. So I used the pattern from another overall dress I have for the top part.

More measurements time! I took my same waist measurement and this time I divided it by two: 50 cm. Then I measured out a 50 cm piece of fabric, plus a few centimeters seam allowance and cutting area (so about 55 cm or so) and folded THAT piece in half. So now you're working with fabric that's your waist measurement divided by FOUR. Still with me? Then I took my overalls and laid down half of it on my fabric and traced around it, all on the WRONG side of the fabric! Now when you cut your fabric it will be symmetrical! Woo hoo!

I repeated the same thing for the back piece, ignoring the straps for now. So when you go to put your two pieces of front and back fabric together, they should add up to your waist measurement! 50 cm front, 50 cm back, 100 cm waist :D (Plus seam allowance!!)

The back and front piece together!

If you want to do these parts but you don't have an overall template you will have to make a few more measurements. Take your bust measurement and divide it by four. This is the measurement for the width of the top piece on the diagram below. Then measure where you want the top of your overall dress to be to the waist, this will be your desired length. Make sure your waist piece is the correct length and make about 7 cm waist band. Then draw a curve from the top to that waist band like in the diagram.

Measuring desired length of top front piece.

Make sure you add seam allowances! Note: The left side of this diagram where it says "Desired length of top piece" is where your fold should be! This is the closed end.

For the back you'll use the same desired length measurement and will make a longer waistband than in the front as well as a skinnier middle piece. Make sure the top part of your back piece where your straps will be attached later is wide enough to be hemmed and still attach two strap pieces!

Speaking of straps, I also just measured the straps on my overalls and cut out pieces that same length and twice the width of those straps. To do these measurements from scratch you might want a friend to help you. Position the front and back pieces on your body where you want them to be and then measure from the tops of each piece over your shoulder. Easy peasy! You really don't need to be fussy about the straps, just make sure they're too long rather than too short so they can be altered later!

Now all you have to do is SEW SEW SEW! Lots and lots of sewing! I started with hemming the circle skirt because I used up all my pins for that task. Then I went on to hem the raw edges of the front piece which included the top area and the arm areas, I didn't hem the bottom because that would be on the inside once I sew the pieces to the skirt. Then I pinned the arm and top of the waist band area on the back piece and hemmed those. The top of the back and the bottom and sides of the back I left raw because I would be sewing straps, the front piece, and the skirt to those sides. Then I did the straps last by just folding the long raw edges in twice and straight stitching down em!

I actually ended up not adding any of those red pieces :c

ASSEMBLY TIME!! This is the most stressful and fulfilling part I'd say because you get to see the final product come together! But beware! This is also the part where things can go wrong!
I started off my sewing the front and back pieces together. I laid them right (outside) faces together and sewed the raw edged waistbands on each side.
Next I sewed the top of the dress to the skirt! Carefully pin the top to the skirt with the top flipped inside out and the raw bottom pinned to the raw top of the skirt. I should've taken a picture of that. Oops! Then I did the straps last. Those are easiest, you probably don't even need an explanation for that part. But anyways I pinned the straps to the back piece, put the dress on and pinned the front pieces, took the dress off, and sewed those places too!

Finished product:

Personally I'm fine with wonky insides with some raw edges still in there. But if you aren't feel free to sew up all those extra raw edges! This is also why I recommend getting a thinner cotton denim or polyester blend, just an overall thinner fabric type because then the hems won't be as bulky and you won't get such a poofy dress! I LOVE poofy skirts, and this one is pretty darn poofy so I guess I can't complain! Hahaha ^>^

Now I want to make a whole bunch in all types of fabric!!! *__* kekeke

With a lil saturn pin I made :3
Thanks so much for reading you guys!! I hope you found this tutorial helpful or inspiring or something! It was hard work to make but worth it in the end :D If you have any questions please ask!! I'll answer as soon as I can and the best I can!

Hope you all have a super duper week!!

~Lifestyle Update: My Summer Goals (Wordy Post!)~

HELLO LOVELY READERS!! Thanks for your patience in waiting for my latest post (if anyone waits for these that is! haha). I've (surprisingly) been busy doing things this past week or so since my summer break began so I haven't had time to blog! I'll post about my recent Seattle adventures among other things in a separate post, but for now I'd like to take the time to show you guys my list of summer goals!

In no particular order, here's what I had on my list that I wrote about a month ago:

Starting from the top of the list I said I wanted to practice my calculus and keep up my chemistry studies over the summer because I don't want to have to trudge through these difficult subjects in the fall because I forgot everything I learned in the fall. I just want to go into my subjects feeling more prepared this upcoming quarter, ya know?

The next one sounds like I'm looking to change up my appearance. And it partially is. But really I want to get fit for the sake of my own health and happiness. I know people say be happy with who you are and whatnot, and it's not that I'm unhappy with who I am now, I just think that if I were to take care of myself a bit better then I'd feel even happier about myself! As for the whole waiting until I shed some pounds and then cut my hair thing, I just want to grow my hair out as long as possible so I can donate it. And to give myself one big makeover at the end of the summer is a nice treat I think ^__^

My parents have been wanting me to get over my fear of driving. And I suppose I could learn this year. This is one goal I'm still hesitant on but I put on my list anyways for motivation!

I've been wanting to get a job for the past three years or so now, but something always got in the way every summer. This summer I'm actually applying to a few stores near my house so transportation won't be a hassle. Fingers crossed! If that doesn't turn out maybe I'll just run an etsy and call it my full year round job rather than trying to get a summer job hahaha. Would you be interested in buying things I make? >.< Hahaha

Internships were another thing I was considering but not over the summer. I go to a research university which means there are lots of opportunities to do internships that give students experience  in many different fields. I haven't looked at the list yet, but I think if I get a head start on it now I could be involved in some cool stuff for next summer!

I've been looking into the bio and psych majors these past nine months or so now as people continually ask me what I'm majoring in! General bio seems like a good fit for me right now, but I really want to look more in depth into all the majors offered at my school and research them so I get to picking the right one.

Right now I only know English, Spanish, and a bit of Tagalog but I really want to broaden my span of languages because I plan on being a doctor in the future and personally I think it would be very beneficial to know as many languages I can! Communication is important in a lot of ways and I think it would just be really cool to learn a bunch of languages and travel around helping people :3

"Journal, blog, and read" <--These are things I didn't have a lot of time to do during the school year (I did read a lot during the school year actually, but here I mean reading leisurely without the pressure of being tested on the subject matter hahaha). So here I am blogging! And I might do a post about journaling if I feel up to it at some point over the summer ;D

These last few things I got from a Tumblr user I follow. She also had a summer goals list and they resonated with me hahaha:

So I guess the launch store thing could be related to my get a job/possible etsy thing ^.^ And sewing cute dresses is something I'm ALWAYS down for! Finding a new look for the upcoming school year also sounds like fun and something I've been wanting to do for awhile now. Experimenting with makeup is something I recently thought about working on so I can improve my technique to get ready even faster in the morning! Haha! Take care of my skin <--THISSS yes my skin has been crazy these past few months maybe with the changing weather and change of skin routine. Whatever it is I just want to improve my skin ASAP. And prob the last thing from this list I can relate to is cute stationary, and that's usually a given, not really a goal haha.

So there we go! All the things I want to achieve this summer! Do any of you have any summer goals you'd like to accomplish? :D It's a really neat way to motivate yourself to get things done, well that's at least how I feel anyways :D Sorry if this was kind of a boring post :3

Hope you all have a wonderful day! Thanks for reading as always!!

~Skincare Review: My Beauty Diary-Royal Jelly Mask~

Last time I posted a review for the Lululun Premium Face Masks, and for some reason a lot of people were interested in that post! So I'm back with another late night blog post to review the My Beauty Diary (MBD) Royal Jelly Mask! I've heard a lot of great things about MBD and yet this is my first time trying it out! I just bought the pack a few hours ago from Uwajimaya in the beauty section. I finally caved in for these masks because I wanted to see if it would work to lighten some of my acne scars since my acne has been clearing lately! I don't actually know if it's because of the new foundation I'm using (Pur Minerals) or new face wash I'm using (CeraVe for oily/normal skin). But either way I'm liking the current results! Now if I can just get my skin to be soft and even toned I'll be happy ^.^ That's why I'm trying out these masks :3 SOOO without further ado, here's the review! Heehee that rhymes :D

***Warning, lots of shots of my face in this post, once again!! LOL***

Heres what the box of masks look like:

I wanted to try the Royal Jelly "flavor" (I guess? haha) because the box claimed it would help with brightening and repairing. Usually with masks the instructions recommend you use it once a week for best results, sometimes even once a day if they're light essence masks. This mask recommends you use it 2-3 times per week! With these I'm going to try to use them at least once a week or at least once every other week to see if they really are working, knowing that not following the box recommendations means I won't get immediate results. BUT! I'm willing to take that chance anyways. Hahaha~

The box comes with 10 masks total, so if you used as directed it would take you about ten weeks if you used it twice per week (see? I can do simple math at least! heh)

Here's what one pack looks like. Inside there is one mask.
Back of the mask package is in Japanese. There are instructions in  English on the side of the box!

Side and front views of my face right when I got home (with make-up on!):

Front/side view after removing make-up with Clinique make-up removing oil and washing face with CeraVe for oily/normal skin:

Aaaaand now it's mask application time!! >:D I made a video for this one! heheheh~ This one comes with a top layer for easy unwrapping and placement so you just put the cloth side down on your face, pat it on and peel the plastic-y top layer off and adjust to fit your face! (Yay I remembered to upload the video more than a month later LOL!!)

And then what I like to do after putting it on is pat the essence (what the masks are soaked in!) into my skin using my fingertips like it says on the box~ I rub the rest of the essence in the pack on my neck as well! ^___^

Scary!! @__@

*pat pat pat*
And now I just leave it on for 20-30 minutes! Or until I can't stand it anymore/it's dried up!

HAHAHA my next post should be a tutorial for how I brush my teeth ;D Jk jk
Front and side views after ~35 minutes!

So far I really like these masks because they seem to contain a lot of essence (not all masks are like that!) and the quality of the mask itself is sturdy and fits on my face quite nicely. The scent is also nice and light. It kind of has a faint honey/floral scent but I could only really smell it when I first put it on, after that I didn't notice it at all! So if you aren't into perfumey masks, this one seems quite natural and not overbearing ^.^ As always, you can't tell whether a mask worked or not after one use, so I'll try my best to keep this updated to let you guys know if it's working or not! :D Though my pores tingle (in a nice, refreshing way) when I have this mask on if that's a testament as to whether it's effective? UwU I'll say it is hahaha~

TL;DR: 8/10 so far! That's actually quite a good overall score, taking into account this is my first time using it and I haven't seen any dramatic effects yet!
~Essence: 8/10 Does it work? Maybe! Gotta use it more often. But it has a nice smooth texture and light scent.
~Mask: 9/10 Pretty easy to put on if you've used masks like these before. Nice and soft and fits my face nicely, doesn't dry up too quickly and doesn't just slide right off my face! Still a little weird around the cupid's bow area though >.<

Thanks so much for reading through this post everyone!! I know I'm just trying to make up for not posting for almost three weeks straight but if you like these posts and think they're helpful that's all that matters! hahaha

xoxoxo

~Lifestyle Update: Seattle Shenanigans and my Besties are Back!~ (Long Post)

Shameless selfie from my Instagram to start out my life update post lolol~

Hello lovelies!! I'm sorry It's been forever since I've posted but finals are creeping up and I'm just trying to make these last few weeks of the quarter count as I near the end of my first year at Uni!! AHHH! I can't believe I've been blogging (although not all that consistently heehee) for almost half a year~ I'll do a proper reader appreciation post in June probably but for now I just want to say thank you to all the amazing readers who have been visiting my blog!!! I really appreciate it and this is the most successful "journaling"attempt I've had in my life so far hahaha. Anyways, I'd also like to take this time to tell you about some fun things I've been up to this past week! This is mostly a filler post so you guys know I'm still dedicated to this blog and will be posting A TON over the summer! Weeeellll at least, that's the plan! :D So without further ado, here's what I've been doing ^___^

This lil' project I did for my besties actually happened about a month ago, but I didn't want to post about it until after I gave them the surprise! Hahaha~ It started out by me asking about what everyone liked on their pizza:

Then I broke out the beloved polymer clay and got makin'! It's silly how they all like similar pizzas (pineapple galore!!) but at least pineapple is relatively easy to make hahaha.

And of course they all fit together like friendship charms! You know hard difficult it is to find a nine person friendship charm?! It's great because we all love pizza :D Other ideas for large group bestie charms could be: pancake stacks (stack em' on top of one another, everyone has their own batter preference I guess? Lol), cake slices, pie slices, puzzle pieces, etc. There are actually quite a few things you could do for friendship charms! They don't even have to fit together, they could even just be matchy like Monopoly piece charms, Scrabble initial tiles, astrology signs ^.^ just to name a few. But bestie charms are definitely the perfect way to connect with your friends in a meaningful way, especially if everyone is all over the place like our group!

Another thing I did this past week was go to my younger sister's Honor Society induction (so proud :,-D) But I don't really want to post pictures of that, as a great of a day as it was.

I just realized I'm an outfit repeater (if you saw one of my last posts lolol oops) #noshame

We grabbed some yummy food in the International District (China Town) at a place called Fortuna(?). A simple little cafe style eatery. I ordered the chicken curry :P

Yummy~
One of the other highlights of my week, however, was going on a field trip for my geology 101 class to the Laser Dome at the Pacific Science Center!

To get there I took the Monorail from Westlake, which is always exciting because I don't take it often enough! Pardon the shakiness and the grainy quality, all these pictures and videos are from my phone :3

From the Monorail I browsed Seattle Center including the Space Needle in all it's glory *__*. Despite living here my entire life I have NEVER been up the Space Needle! I hope that changes over the summer! :D

It was so nice that day <3

AHHH CHIN SHOT!! DELETE IT DELETE IT AHHHH! lolol

Tryin' to be cute in front of the EMP.

OH and this right here was super cool. These are the solar power energy Giant Flower art pieces next to the Chihuly Garden and Glass Sculpture place! Super cool to see in the day time and apparently they light up at night! I wanted to stay later to see that but I didn't want to walk home from the bus stop in the dark haha.

It's an interactive art piece so when you go up next to the flowers they sort of "sing". And according to the artist, the bands on the stems of the flowers are some sort of code that can be deciphered by inquisitive spectators. I have yet to figure it out! So cool!

For our field trip we watched a private screening of a documentary-ish type movie called volcanoes of the deep sea. And it was so cool to watch in the Laser Dome with the huge speakers and everything! I want to go back to watch one of their actual laser shows @__@

Here's a really dark and shoddy video of what it looked like inside the Dome, kind of. It was super dark in there ok? lol

I also want to go back to browse the Pacific Science Center itself ^.^ It's such a cool place! SOOO many cool things going on around Seattle Center. Definitely check it out if you're around this area!

I didn't wanna go up the Space Needle solo that day (though now I'm regretting not taking the opportunity and being spontaneous lol) but I did go inside the base of the Needle where the gift shop is~ hahaha

My shenanigans~ I wish my phone had a front cam so I wouldn't look as derpy in these photos >.< hahaha.

And last but not least I hung out with my BFFs on a Friday night (whoop whoop!) to see Pitch Perfect 2! We also ate IHop for dinner which was a nice lil' bonus :3 It was a crazy night and some odd things happened...But for the most part we had a great time and it was the best thing ever to see my girlies again!! <3 I missed them all soooo much :,D Going to separate colleges can be tough, but it makes our time spent together all the more memorable!

Pre-movie at IHop ^__^

Thank goodness my ladies are selfie/selfwe takers because I never take pictures of when we hang out >,< and it's a shame but I always get so caught up in the moment that I forget to do it! Hahaha

Post movie: it was already midnight and people had work tomorrow LOLOL I hadn't been out with friends past midnight since prom of senior year :,-D Good times.
Thanks so much for taking the time to catch up with my life cutie pies! Hopefully I can get through these next few weeks and finals, and then SUMMMERR VAY-CAY!! WOO! *soon* Hope you guys are doing great too!

xoxo Abby <3

***BONUS ROUND!! I actually did stuff on Memorial Day Monday when I thought I was just going to be cleaning and studying and stuff...BUT!! My parents were actually willing to take us to China Town and do a bit of browsing! YEEE! So here's a bit of that:

DELICIOUS AHHH~
We got bibimbap from Shilla inside Uwajimaya in the International District. I believe I talked a bit about Uwaji in a previous post (though I can't recall which one at the moment heh oops) It's basically a large Asian grocery focused market located int the ID of Seattle :3 Love it there. The food court is AMAZING~ And the service is terrific ^.^

I want more :F

Also managed to pick up some other lil' goodies besides groceries! I don't know if you guys know about my obsession with keychains. My obsession list probably goes: 1.) Bags/purses (especially the ones that come "free" with Japanese magazines) 2.) Keychains/charms 3.) ALL THE SHOES.

Ampanman apple man toy, Aikatsu! (I think?) stamp/keychain charm, and Hello Kitty re-ment phone strap charm <3__<3 The HK one was a surprise pack! I got the pudding one :3 would've been happy with any one of them though! YAYY!

I did a review on the My Beauty Diary Masks I picked up from there too so check it out if you want! :D

Hope you guys had a great Memorial Day weekend as well!
